One day I had an epiphany: Wild Ginger is literally a block away from my apartment and on the list of my editor’s vegetarian recommendations. Talk about a coincidence of cuisine! Okay, that was cheesy. But I was in a pinch and wanted to try something new. So I hopped over and picked up the all-vegan Thai menu. After mulling it over quickly, I made my choices. Luckily, the woman who helped me was kind enough to accept my Amex in spite of their anti-Amex policy.
Name: Wild Ginger
Location: 380 Broome Street
Time: 6 pm
Order: Seitan skewers and scallion pancakes
Price: $11
Review: Despite its considerable amount of grease, my dinner was delicious. Before Wild Ginger, I was a seitan virgin. Although I adore faux meat (a vegetarian girl’s gotta fill her void somehow), I was a bit reticent to try it. Now I know I love it. The skewers alternated between juicy, ‘meaty’ seitan and crunchy, yummy peppers/onions. The scallion pancakes were very flavorful and fun-sized. I did not, however, enjoy the mango salsa. It was a bit awkward with its paucity of flavor and consistency. Overall, it was a good meal.
